     YouTube.com - Maui Camping Guide - Waianapanapa Cave           Comments: Found at the end of a jungle trail located in Waianapanpa State Park, the fresh water cave is a cool respite from the tropical heat. Steeped in legend and lore, it is said to be the place of refuge where Queen Popualaea hid from her jealous husband, King Kaakea. Betrayed by her reflection in the glistening waters, the King found her and murdered her in his rage -- turning the waters red with her blood. Each spring red shrimp appear in the waters of the cave to remind the King of the wrong he had done. This is one of my favorite places on Maui. When camping at Waianapanapa State Park, make sure you make the morning or evening visit to the cave after the mid-day crowds have left the area.      YouTube.com - Waianapanapa Cave           Comments: The Legend of Waianapanapa Caves Once upon a time a Hawaiian Princess named Popoalaea fled from her cruel husband. The chief Kakae. She hid on a ledge just inside the underwater entrance to this cave. A faithful serving maid sat acoss from her fanning the princess with a feather Kahili symbol of royalty. Noticing the reflection of the Kahili in the water, the chief Kakae discovered Popoalaeas hiding place and killed her. At certain times of the year tiny red shrimp appear in the pool. Turning the water red. Some say it is a reminder of the blood of the slain princess.

     YouTube.com - Waianapanapa cave on Maui           Comments: Porsha and I swimming at the Waianapanapa caves on the road to Hana in Hawaii. I didn't get a good view of the whole cave, so look for some other Waianapanapa cave videos for a better idea, but we were able to swim about 20 feet in under the cave before it got too dark.
