Located on the northeastern side of the island, this 18 mile difficult trail zigzags up the western wall of Waipio Valley, climbing approximately 1200` to the plateau. It then leads across the plateau area to Waimanu, crossing 12 gulches that are up to 500` deep, then descends another 1200` into Waimanu Valley. It is minimally maintained, steep, deeply eroded in places, rocky, muddy, and slippery when wet. Only experienced hikers in good physical condition should attempt it. Directions: Highway 240 leads off Highway 19 at Honoka`a to the eastern edge of Waipio Valley. A steep, four wheel drive road extends from the lookout down into the valley. Comments: Halau Hula 'O Kawahineali'inohoikeanuenue and The Royal Dancers of Pupukahi features a beautiful hula entitled, Muliwai written by Charles Pokipala, Sr.& Daniel Kapahuonaali`i Pokipala. This hula was performed on the island of Oahu at the Manoa Grand Ballroom in celebration of our halau 20th Anniversary and Reunion 2011. This mele/song was composed for the family home near the mouth of the Ala Wai. Verse 2 tells of the well polished floors. Verse 3 alludes to the heads of the household who monitor the guests, their behavior and discipline, if necessary. Verse 5 says the home is the gathering place of many people or birds. "He Aloha Mele" attributes the background of this song to the Kohala families and Pololû.
