Anahola - Jerimiah Kaialoa, Sr.

Hanohano Kalalea kau mai i luna
ʻO ka pali kaulana aʻo Anahola

ʻAlawa iho ʻoe iā Konanae
ʻO ka hoapili like o kuʻu milimili

I laila hoʻi au ʻike ihola
Nā kaula likini mōliolio

Huli aku nānā iā Amu
I ka makani ʻalo ʻehu hele ulūlu

Haʻina ʻia mai ana ka puana
ʻO ka pali kaulana aʻo Anahola

Majestic Kalalea rises above
The famous cliff of Anahola

You glance at Konanae
The beloved close companion

I was there and I saw
The rigging lines pulled tautly

Turn and look at Amu
The wind that blows fiercely

The story be told
Of the famous cliff of Anahola

Anahola is homestead land on Kauaʻi. Kalalea is a hill inland at Anahola. Legend says a spear was hurled at the hill piercing it. This hole is named Konanae and collapsed during hurricane ʻIniki. The spear is lying in the stream bed nearby. Verse 3, tells of the activities at the ship’s landing on the southern corner of Anahola beach, that was constructed about 1900. Amu is the place name of a small section of land and the name of the wind there, that blows in all directions. Translator unknown, Hawaiian Text edited by Puakea Nogelmeier
